The Margaretha Maria
A number of Devon fishermen were lost when the Margaretha Maria went down in the South'Western approaches. This film shows lifebuoy and emergency beacons which failed to operate, open hatches and a snagged winch. |

The Pescado
The 'Pescado' is an example of how a gear failure can turn into a catastophe. In this case suspicion rests with one of the two "beams" - the derricks which lift the nets on either side of a beam trawler. There appears to have been a catastrophic sequence of events leading to the wheelhouse being crushed, again safety equipment failed to operate. In fact one 10-man liferaft was beyond its expiry date. With this and other problems such as open hatches and portholes, a mechanical failure proved fatal. |
