Wisteria (no audio)
Thursday 26 October 2000. Stornoway Coastguard co-ordinated the rescue of 4 fishermen from their fishing boat 'Wisteria' after they abandoned their liferaft 10 miles south east of Castle Bay on the Isle of Barra. An Inmarsat 'C' distress signal had been picked up from the boat by Falmouth Coastguard and relayed to Stornoway. There had also been an emergency call from another fishing vessel 'The Three Sisters', which stood by and assisted in the rescue, taking two of the four men on board. The rescue efforts were hampered by southwesterly force 5 to 6 winds and a 3 metre swell. Coastguard helicopter 'Mike Uniform' from Stornaway was scrambled and the Barra Coastguard Rescue team mobilised, helping with communication links between rescue units. The Barra lifeboat was launched and was able to transfer the remaining two men to 'The Three Sisters'. Thankfully, no injuries were reported and 'The Three Sisters' took the fishermen to Mallaig. Two further fishing vessels stood by until the Wisteria sank. |
